MOD9(TM) (c) 2010
MOD9 Quarterback Rating Rating a quarterback's performance should be done on a relative scale. This is at odds with conventional thinking in which a player's rating can be judged in absolute terms. So, I set out to create a stat to measure quarterback performance that is more accurate of the player's value to his team compared to other players in the league. With a sample size large spanning multiple seasons and styles of play, the relative measurement can become more like the absolute stat fans seem to enjoy. Additionally, in order to compare quarterbacks who may not have played all sixteen games, efficiency statistics are used as the basis of comparison. The MOD9 system uses stats/game instead of stats/season to better quantify a quarterback's impact on games. MOD9 is calculated as follows:
MOD9=(TDp+TDr)*6+TWOPT*2-(INT+Fl)*3-SACK*1.5
TDp=Touchdowns passing per game for the player minus touchdowns passing per game average
TDr=Touchdowns rushing per game for the player minus touchdowns rushing per game average
TWOPT=Two point conversions per game for the player minus two point conversions per game average
INT=Interceptions per game for the player minus interceptions per game average
Fl=Fumbles lost per game for the player minus fumbles lost per game average
SACK=Sacks per game for the player minus sacks per game average
